Day 7: Preveza to Igoumenitsa

Today was another nice but cool day. My goal for today was to make it to Igoumenitsa, about 95 km away, to a campsite that was recommended by a Greek acquantience.

I got started late, at about 12 noon. This would make it a challenge to get to my destination before it started getting dark. Turns out, however, that today proved to be the most straightforward and fast riding of the trip. I had a few 5km segments where my average was over 30km/h.

The only eventful thing that happened along the way was that there was about a 30km portion where it rained. Once it started however, I slipped into my Gore-Tex gear and stayed try except for my hands and face. (I should have probably invested in Gore-Tex gloves as well.)

The problem that the rain causes is mainly two-fold: visibility and slippery roads. For visibility I attached my rear lights and for the slippery roads I made sure my down-hill speed didn't go above 30km/h.

At about 7:30pm I made it to the campsite located on a thin peninsula jutting out towards were the ferries pass by. By 8pm I had things set up.

Sunset over Corfu

While setting up my tent, I met an Austrian guy pushing 2 babies in a stroller. Turns out his wife worked at the Embassy in Tirana. I spent the evening talking with them at there camper, eating toasted cheese bread and drinking some Albanian schnapps before calling it a night.

My knee felt a little better for most of the ride. Near the end, however, it seemed to have gotten worse again. Still, I can live with that.

Tomorrow, I'll be entering Albania!

Here is this day's route data.
